Leitrim County Council is responsible for the Register of Electors for the County of Leitrim. A new Register of Electors is prepared each year and comes into force on the 15th February, it is used at each election and referendum held in the succeeding 12 months.
Every resident aged 18 and upwards is entitled to be on the Register. A person must be ordinarily resident at the address at which he/she wishes to be registered. Every adult resident in the state is entitled to be registered, their citizenship determines the type of elections they may vote in:
- Referenda: Only Irish citizens can vote in referenda e.g. to vote for or against a proposal to modify the Irish constitution.
- Presidential: Only Irish citizens can vote in Presidential Elections.
- Elections for Dáil Éireann: Both Irish and British citizens can vote in elections for Dáil Éireann.
- Elections for the European Parliament: Irish, British and other European Union (EU) citizens can vote in elections for the European Parliament.
- Elections for Local Government: Irish, British, EU and non-EU citizens can vote in local elections.
Supplement to the Register
When an election/referendum is called during the life of the Register a supplement is prepared to facilitate those electors who may have changed address, will have reached 18 years of age by polling day or who are not registered to vote. Application form RFA2 must be completed.
Registering for Inclusion in the Draft Register of Electors
The Draft Register of Electors is published on the 1st November each year. It is made available for examination at Post Offices, Public Libraries, Garda Stations and Local Authority offices up until 25th November. It is very important to check the draft during this period to make sure that you are correctly registered. Members of the public have an opportunity to submit a claim for amendment to the Draft on form RFA1. These are determined by the County Register at Revision Courts held in the local electoral areas usually in early December. Interested parties are notified of the outcome of the Revision Courts.
Special Voters List
If you have a physical illness or physical disability that is likely to continue for the duration (12 months from 15th February) of the Register and you are ordinarily resident in a hospital, in a home or similar institution, you may apply for inclusion in the Special Voters List. Postal Voters List
If you have a physical illness or physical disability and you wish to vote by post from your home, you may apply to go on the Postal Voters List. You may only apply for entry on this List, if:
(i) you are unable to go in person to vote at your polling station due to physical illness or physical disability; and
(ii) the illness or disability is likely to continue for the duration (12 months from 15th February) of the Register to which the application relates.
