The principal duties of Leitrim County Council as Roads Authority for the County are as follows:-
To provide and maintain a safe and efficient roads network throughout the County.
To prepare, adopt and implement the Annual Road Works Scheme based on annual allocation of money by the National Roads Authority and the D.O.E.H.L.G. and the Council’s own resources.
To prepare, adopt and implement a Non-National Roads Multi-Annual Restoration Programme within the criteria devised by the D.O.E.H.L.G.
To carry out emergency repairs to roads – e.g., pothole repairs, drainage along roads, etc.
To facilitate individuals and utilities who require to open the public road/footpath or road margin by means of Road Opening Licences and to ensure compliance with the licences.
Issue of Statutory Notice under the Roads Act, 1993 – Leitrim County Council issues notices to landowners/occupiers regarding hedgecutting and drainage along public roads.
In conjunction with Regional Design Offices, the road authority prepare designs for new National Roads including by-pass of towns and villages and seek funding for such projects. Undertake re-designs of junctions, bends, etc. on non-national roads in the interests of road safety.
Employment of Consultants and Contractors to design and undertake certain road project.
Acquisition of Land by Agreement and Compulsory for road purposes.
Consultation with landowners/occupiers and the general public regarding road development proposals and general roads matters.
Footpath renewal/provision in towns and villages.
Improvement and upkeep of public lighting.
Implementation of Local Improvement Schemes on non-public roads.
Promotion of Road Safety.
