Farm Surveys in the Lough Melvin Catchment

Farm Surveys in the Lough Melvin Catchment - North Western International River Basin District

Leitrim County Council will be carrying out farm surveys in the Lough Melvin Catchment area during the months of November and December 2011. This area includes the rural area between Kinlough and Rossinver, the Glenaniff River catchment, the Ballagh River catchment, the County River catchment and the rural area between Kinlough and Derrynaseer.

The farm surveys are a necessary part of comprehensive measures to restore the water quality status of Lough Melvin to that of the early 1990’s. The importance of Lough Melvin as a drinking water source and as a Special Area of Conservation has been taken into consideration in prioritising surveys in this area. The surveys will also include Leitrim County Councils obligations to carry out farm inspections under the European Communities (Good Agricultural Practice for Protection of Waters) Regulations 2010.

Survey staff will seek to contact each farmer so that they have the opportunity to be in attendance during the inspection. The co-operation of farmers in this project will be appreciated.
