What is a Community Floral Pride Project?

This could involve transforming an empty space in your village/town into a green living space. It is a collective effort, by members of the community who share in its creation, maintenance and the rewards of the replanted and designed area. The two obvious benefits of community planting are the beautification of a barren space, and a strengthened sense of community. The impact of a community area can reach much further than this:

    • Sustainable Environment
    • New Community Interest
    • Reducing Litter
    • Something to work together on
    • Crime Reduction
    • Education & Development of Youth (School Gardens)

Entering the Floral Pride competition provides opportunities for Community Groups, Schools, Businesses to win money which can then be re-invested into improving the areas for future years.

    Sources of Advice

Your Local Garden Centre is generally a good starting point, and will be able to tell you what time of year to plant different species of flowers and shrubs, maintenance and colour variety. You are probably familiar with people in your community who are "green fingered" and would be more than willing to help your community get started.

    Getting Everybody Involved!

A key element of making your Floral Pride Project a successful one
is to get as many people involved as possible – this does not
necessarily mean having everyone involved in a revitalizing one
barren area in the village/town – it could be:

    • Asking people to put out flower boxes on the windows of their houses or business premises.
    • Encouraging more people to grow flowers in their own gardens
    • Perhaps assigning a different section of the project to different groups within your community.
