Statement on the death of Tony Ferguson - Member of Leitrim County Council 1979 - 2014.

It is with deep regret that Leitrim County Council has been notified of the death of Tony Ferguson, Edenville, Kinlough, Co. Leitrim, former Elected Member of Leitrim County Council. On behalf of the Management, Staff and Elected Members, Leitrim County Council wish to convey our deepest sympathy to the wife and family of the deceased. Tony had a long and distinguished career as a Councillor with Leitrim County Council and was first elected to the Council following the 1979 Local Elections. He subsequently commenced his term in office on 14thJune, 1979 representing the constituents of the Manorhamilton Electoral Area. Once elected to the Council, Tony retained his seat until his retirement on 1st June, 2014. He also served as Cathaoirleach of Leitrim County Council on a number of occasions and he represented the Council on a number of external bodies and committees during his political career.

Chief Executive of Leitrim Council Frank Curran in expressing his sympathy noted that "throughout his 35 years of dedicated public representation Tony served the people of Leitrim in an exemplary manner, he worked tirelessly for the betterment of the county and he will be fondly remembered by his family, colleagues, staff and the community he served as a public representative".  

Cathaoirleach John McCartin also stated that, "The passing of Tony Ferguson marks the end of an era, Tony epitomised the perfect politician". "A man of remarkable intellect and ability, dedicated campaigner, a powerfully persuasive performer and a representative who could transcend politics to work to build a better community for all".  Councillor McCartin went on to state that "Tony was a most effective public representative due, in no small way, to the fact that his appetite to achieve consensus was only equalled by his ability to demolish opposition".  "To the fore of my abiding memory of Tony is the reverence he gave to his mandate, the respect with which he treated his colleagues and council staff and how he encouraged and advised me in my first term on Leitrim County Council."
