PUBLIC NOTICE – KEELDRA LAKE
Leitrim County Council has identified an algal bloom on this lake, which may be harmful to humans and animals. The occurance of blooms is most likely in Summer, during warm, calm weather conditions. An algal bloom may be seen as blue / green streaks or slimey scums on the surface.
As a public health measure, Leitrim County Council wishes to advise the public as follows.
Ø Do not swim in waters where algal blooms are present
Ø Humans and animals should avoid contact with areas that have
visible algal concentrations and / or scums in the water as well as on the shore.
Ø Illness including skin rashes, vomiting and diarrhoea may result
from contact with algal bloom or algal scum
Ø During algal blooms avoid ingestion of waters as this is associated
with the greatest health risks.
Ø Animals, both farm and domestic, should be prevented from
drinking water from the lake.
Ø If you do come into contact with the algal bloom, shower / wash as
soon as possible to remove the algal matter. Wash all effected clothing and equipment thoroughly.
