This year National Fire Safety Week will again be jointly run between the Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government in Dublin and the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service. The week will be officially launched in Belfast’s RADAR Safety Centre on Monday 5th October by Interim Chief Fire and Rescue Officer, Mr Dale Ashford.  This year’s theme for National Fire Safety Week is ‘Smoking at Home Can Cause Fatal Fires’ and is about enhancing fire safety, particularly in the home. This year’s campaign will target people who smoke and aims to reduce accidental fires in the home attributable to the careless use and disposal of smoking materials. Households will also be encouraged to have smoke alarms fitted and to ensure they are in good working order. They should be tested at least once a week.

Leitrim County Council through its fire service has always taken a proactive role in promoting fire safety events for this special week. All fire fighters and senior fire officers will work together to promote fire safety.    On average 36 people die in Ireland each year as a result of fire with the very young and elderly being particularly vulnerable. House fires account for the vast majority of these fire fatalities. Constant vigilance is needed in relation to fire safety. All of us have a part to play. We will aim to influence the most vulnerable in the community and to guide them towards safe behaviour.

Leitrim County Council will continue to implement our successful Community Smoke Alarm project which is aimed at increasing the coverage of smoke alarms in the community.  Approximately 10% of households do not have a working smoke alarm. It is planned to allocate smoke alarms to more vulnerable households in Leitrim again this year.  We will also distribute smoke alarm testers to vulnerable groups to help them to get into the habit of testing their smoke alarms regularly. The Council will distribute additional smoke alarms during the week.
