Lough Rinn International Rowing Centre wins Excellence Award

At the recent Engineers Ireland Awards held in the InterContinental Hotel Dublin on Friday November 9th last, Leitrim County Council and their partners Jennings O’Donovan & Partners Limited won the Local Authority Initiative Award, sponsored by Colas Bitumen Emulsions for the Lough Rinn International Rowing and Canoe Course Project.

The vision for the Lough Rinn International Rowing and Canoe Course Project was to create a world class facility that would serve as a centre of excellence for water sports. The objective was to create a resource that could be utilized by both local communities and national organisations, including sporting bodies and the general public alike, where residents, visitors and athletes will benefit from a unique shared space and enjoy water based activities such as rowing, canoeing, kayaking, fishing and leisure boat activities.

Developed by Leitrim County Council and Jennings O’Donovan & Partners Limited, this was a very technical, complex project with engineering challenges of significant magnitude, complicated by the use of heavy civil/marine engineering works on or adjacent to the water and  poor, soft lake bed conditions.

Councillor Sean McGowan, Cathaoirleach of Leitrim County Council said “This is a real good news story for Leitrim. I would like to compliment Director of Services Joseph Gilhooley, the engineering staff of Leitrim County Council and the local authority members for their excellent work in developing this project which is the envy of many counties. We welcome visitors and athletes to this resource and we look forward to hosting many successful events in this international standard centre in the years ahead.”

Bookings for the use of the facility should be made through Leitrim Sports Partnership by emailing sports@leitrimcoco.ie or by phone on 71 9650498.

The Engineers Ireland Excellence Awards, held in association with ESB, are presented annually in recognition of the achievements of engineers who have demonstrated exceptional engineering skills through their work.
