Placenames of Co. Leitrim

Leitrim Placenames
The placenames of Leitrim are now available on www.logainm.ie, the website of An Coimisiún Logainmneacha or The Placenames Commission. The versions they give are now the officially recognized versions and should be used for all purposes.
Previous to this the versions of the names produced by John O'Donovan during the Ordnance Survey in the 1830s were the only available alternative. These names, townlands mainly, have been listed here under civil parish. The meaning of the placename in English is also given. Generally speaking, the name as interpreted by O'Donovan has been left as it was. In the 2000s the Irish spellings of the names were standardised by Leitrim Co Library. They are still of use in some cases because O'Donovan listed placenames that were not subsequently used as official townland names.

In the original O'Donovan's Name Books the placenames were listed under Civil Parishes. There were 17 Civil Parishes as opposed to 24 Church parishes. People are more familiar with Church Parishes and the church parishes are listed below, referring you to the relevant Civil Parish

Logainmneacha Liatroma

Tá logainmneacha Liatroma ar fáil anois ar www.logainm.ie, suíomh An Choimisiún Logainmneacha agus ba cheart na leagain sin a úsáid mar is iad siúd na leagain oifigiúla.
Roimhe seo ní raibh le fáil ach na liostaí a ndearna Seán Ó Donnabháin le linn an tSuirbhé Ordanáis ins na hocht déag tríochaidí. Tá na logainmneacha sin liostáilte anseo faoi Pharóiste Cathartha. Tá míniú an logainm i mBéarla tugtha freisin. Go ginearálta, tugtar logainmneacha mar a bhí siad leagtha amach ag Ó Donnabháin ach amháin go n-úsáidtear litriú nua-aimseartha ann. Tá na liostaí seo úsáideach fós mar is iomaí logainm atá breactha síos ag Ó Donnabháin nár baineadh úsáid as mar logainm oifigiúil.

Chun teacht ar logainm.

Thug Ó Donnabháin na liostaí faoi Pharóistí Cathartha. Bhí 17 Paróistí Cathartha ann ach bhí 24 Paróistí Eaglasta sa chontae. Ni mór, mar sin, eolas a bheith agat ar cén paróiste sibhialta ina bhfuil do bhaile fearann. Faoin liosta thíos, gheobhaidh tú an paróiste cathartha cuí.
