Diversity Programme

The European Union, in recognition of the significant challenges that face Northern Ireland and the Border Region of Ireland, has made a specific allocation of funding within the new regulations 2014-2020 to address issues associated with the creation of a more peaceful society. These regulations have made provision for a budget of €229m for a new PEACE Programme under the European Regional Development Fund.

The new programme - Peace IV - will provide support to projects that contribute towards the promotion of greater levels of peace and reconciliation. It will place a strong emphasis on promoting cross-community relations and understanding in order to create a more cohesive society.

Approximately €1.7m worth of funding has been secured by Leitrim County Council as Lead Partner on behalf of the County Leitrim Peace IV Partnership.

The Diversity Programme relates to the Children & Young People theme and has been split into 2 projects – Conflict, Tolerance & Difference & Diversity Through the Arts.

Conflict, Tolerance & Difference

This project seeks to use age appropriate methodologies to deliver a programme which will help children develop skills to help them reduce conflict and provide them with problem-solving techniques. It will be delivered to 6 – 12 year olds.

This programme was advertised on eTenders and the Leitrim County Childcare Committee were the successful with their ‘Connect & Respect’ proposal.

This programme will explore the concepts of conflict, tolerance and difference between children of Catholic, Protestant and ethnic minority backgrounds and will focus on direct work with children through activities that will raise levels of empathy. The objective of this work is to encourage children to develop more caring relationships with reduced levels of bullying, aggression and overall conflict.

The project was launch in June 2018 and has run numerous summer camps throughout the county.

The programme will be managed by Debbie Lavelle & Nancy Healy from the Childcare Committee. For more information on activities and events around this project contact Debbie or Nancy on debbie@leitrimchildcare.ie  / nancy@leitrimchildcare.ie  or follow https://www.facebook.com/leitrimcountychildcarecommittee/

Diversity Through the Arts

This part of the programme will use the arts to explore other cultures and faiths and increase acceptance of differences.  It will be delivered to 9 – 12 year olds.

This programme was advertised on eTenders and the North Connaught Youth Services in collaboration with artists Kate Wilson, Róisín Loughrey & Devon MacGillivray were successful with their ‘Same Difference’ proposal.

Through the use of dance, music and film & photography participants will work together in a fun and inclusive environment exploring themes of difference, common ground and incongruence.

The workshops will take part in 3 locations around the County;

            -           Film & Photography in The Glen Centre Manorhamilton

            -           Music in The Base Cafe, Drumshanbo

            -           Dane in The Dock, Carrick-on-Shannon

Spaces for each element of the programme are limited to 15, aged 9-12 in each area, so anyone interested is asked to contact 071-9641721 or any of the artists to book a place.
